Guidelines for Submissions to the Ireland Chair of Poetry Pamphlet Series 2027 

Purpose and Objective of the Pamphlet Series:   

The Ireland Chair of Poetry Trust has established this series to encourage and assist poets in their creative development. The Trust hopes that this award will offer emerging poets who have not yet published a pamphlet or collection the opportunity to establish their careers and enhance their professional development.      

Please note: Poets submitting must have had at least three poems published in journals or periodicals and will need to submit a publication list as part of the application. Please see the eligibility requirements below for more details.  

    Overview & Key Dates 

• Publisher: HOWL New Irish Writing (in partnership with the Ireland Chair of Poetry Trust). 
• Details: Selected poets receive 75 free copies plus a 50% author discount on additional copies. 
• Editing & Launch: Selected poets must be available for editing with HOWL New Irish Writing during January and February 2027; launch in June 2027 (TBC). 
• Deadline: October 29, 2026, at 2:00 PM. 
• How to Apply: Online via Submittable only (email/postal entries will not be accepted).

 Eligibility Requirements 

• Residency: Must reside in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland at the time of application. 
• Publication History: Must not have previously published a pamphlet, chapbook, or full collection (self-published work without an ISBN/distribution is allowed). Must have published at least three individual poems in journals or periodicals. 
• Language & Content: Irish language poems are eligible. Foreign-language prior publications are ineligible. AI-generated work is strictly prohibited. 
• Exclusivity: No simultaneous manuscript submissions. Individual poems previously published or awarded individual prizes are accepted. 

 Required Application Documents 

1. Application Form: Fully completed. 
2. CV: Up to 2 pages. 
3. Publication List: Include journal title, date, issue/volume number, page reference, and link (if applicable). 
4. Poetry Manuscript: 

• 17- 20 A4 pages of poetry. 
• Start each new poem on a fresh page (long poems may span multiple pages, but single pages cannot contain multiple poems). 
• Format: Standard 12pt font. 
• Blind Submission: Do not include your name anywhere on the manuscript. NB: Give the manuscript a non-generic title and use this title in both your application form and file name. 

 Assessment Process 

• All applications received are automatically acknowledged by Submittable. 
• Panel: Evaluated by the Ireland Professor of Poetry and two Trustees. 
• Criteria: Judged competitively on artistic merit and alignment with award priorities. Panellists must declare any conflicts of interest. 
• Notification: All applicants will be notified of results via email. The panel's decision is final. 

 Submission Checklist 

[  ] I am a resident of the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. 

[  ] I have included a completed application form containing the non-generic title of my manuscript.   

[  ] My file name matches the manuscript title.   

[  ] I have removed my name from the manuscript to ensure a blind submission.   

[  ] My manuscript is 17 - 20 A4 pages, formatted in 12pt standard font, with max one poem per page.   

[  ] I have included an up-to-date CV (max 2 pages).   

[  ] I have included a publication list detailing at least 3 published poems (journal, date, issue, page, link). 

[  ] I have not published a pamphlet or collection, nor submitted this manuscript elsewhere. 

[  ] My work contains no AI-generated content.
